Death knell for the Canadian seal hunt: Russia bans trade in harp seal pelts

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is applauding the news that Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation have banned the import and export of harp seal skins.  Canada claims that Russia is one of the last two major remaining markets for Canadian seal products, reportedly receiving up to 90% of Canada's exports of seal pelts.  The IFAW says this is a major victory in the campaign to end commercial sealing, and that it should send a strong me

Zwei Wölfe in Westpolen geschossen

Jäger aus Belgien haben am vergangenen Wochenende zwei Wölfe der deutsch-polnischen Wolfspopulation in Westpolen erschossen. Die Jäger hatten an einer Treibjagd auf Hirsche teilgenommen.

Da Wölfe auch in Polen streng geschützt sind, wurden sofort Polizei und Staatsanwaltschaft informiert. Die Jäger behaupteten, sie hätten die Wölfe für Marderhunde gehalten.

IFAW arbeiten daran, wilde Wölfe wieder in Westpolen zu schützen.Es ist kalt. Der Atem dampft und unter den Schneeschuhen knirscht der tiefe Schnee. Mit einer kleinen Gruppe von Biologen stapfe ich durch die tief verschneite Berglandschaft der schlesischen Beskiden, südlich von Krakau, Polen. Für mich ist es nicht nur eine sehr schöne Landschaft, sondern auch eine spannende.

Wie jetzt bekannt wurde beschlagnahmten am Montag malaiische Behördenvertreter 15 Tonnen Elfenbein in der Hafenstadt Port Klang. Es ist der sechste Aufgriff von Elfenbein in Malaysia innerhalb der letzten Monate.

Das weiße Gold war in Containern versteckt, die in Mombasa, Kenia, verladen wurden und laut Papieren „Handwerk aus Sandstein“ enthalten sollten. Sie waren auf dem Weg zur Hafenstadt Sihanouk Ville in Kambodscha. Laut malaiischen Behörden hat das beschlagnahmte Elfenbein einen Marktwert von etwa 17,8 Millionen Euro.
