Traditionally, the annual hunt off the coast of Newfoundland is closed until mid-April to allow mothers to give birth to their pups and nurse without disruption. The genitalia would be obtained by killing 140.000 grey seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence &ndash; 70 percent of the current population.
