Elephants are in crisis. After surviving for over 5 million years, these sentient, highly intelligent and social animals are now threatened with extinction as tens of thousands are killed each year to feed an apparent insatiable appetite for ivory. To meet demand elephants are killed inhumanely using weapons that are designed to kill an 80kg human rather than a 5000kg animal. As such it can take many bullets and a long time for an elephant to die.</p> </div><p><a href="http://www.ifaw.org/canada/news/noivoryineu-ifaw-campaign-close-european-ivory-trade" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Political advocacy Elephants Elephants CITES elephants end the ivory trade IUCN Ivory Thu, 29 Jun 2017 19:28:07 +0000 adintino 111819 at http://www.ifaw.org Elephant populations increase in Tsavos http://www.ifaw.org/canada/news/elephant-populations-increase-tsavos <div class="field field-type-date field-field-date"> <div class="field-label">Publication Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Jun 21 2017</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-optional"> <div class="field-label">Image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_optional" width="300" height="200" title="Elephant populations increase in Tsavos" alt="Elephant populations increase in Tsavos" src="http://d2mlnkprj9wd81.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/010_DSC9034_300px.jpg?1498049821" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="node-body"><p>Elephant populations in the Tsavos have increased to 12, 866 in the last three years.
