A majority of Canadians want to see an end to the commercial seal hunt.According to media reports, today is the day that the sole sealskin processor – Carino Ltd - will stop purchasing seal pelts from sealers for 2013, bringing an end to yet another year of Canada’s commercial seal hunt.

Interpol and IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare – www.ifaw.org) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Interpol’s international headquarters in Lyon, France. This is the first ever MoU signed by Interpol’s Environmental Crime Programme with an NGO.

Enorme ivoorvangst in Dubai: 259 slagtanden in beslag genomen

Douanebeambten in Dubai hebben 259 olifantenslagtanden onderschept. Dit is de grootste ivoorvangst in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten tot nu toe.

De slagtanden werden onderschept op 1 mei 2013, tijdens een routinecontrole met röntgenstraling van een container, die werd verscheept vanuit Mombasa in Kenia naar Jebel Ali Port. Volgens het label bevatte de container ‘houten meubelen’.

         今天,由国际爱护动物基金会(International Fund for Animal  Welfare,简称IFAW,www.ifaw.org.cn)、天津市科学技术协会、天津工艺美术职业学院、北方网和河北区科协共同主办的“‘修补生命之网’大学生野生动物保护行动竞赛——暨2013年天津科技周之校园行”正式启动,揭开了天津大学生用切实行动打击网络野生动物贸易活动的序幕。

        根据国际刑警组织的数据,每年国际间进行的非法野生生物贸易高达200亿美元,仅次于非法的军火和毒品贸易。而网络交易手段的隐蔽性、机动性为野生动物交易的达成提供了诸多便利条件。IFAW监测发现,网络野生动物贸易中的物种大多数为《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》(CITES)附录I保护物种,而在监测到的商品中,象牙制品占了绝大多数。

IFAW donated 5000 euros to the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.

IFAW donated 5000 euros to the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.This spring couldn’t have had a better start for Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire. They received a donation of 5000 euros from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)!

This much needed money is going to be well spent.

The Dutch Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman started Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire twenty years ago.

Dubai Ivory Bust Seizes 259 Elephant Tusks

Dubai customs authorities have announced the seizure of 259 elephant tusks – believed to be the biggest bust yet of contraband ivory in the UAE.

The tusks were seized on 1 May, 2013 during a routine x-ray inspection of a container shipped from Mombasa, Kenya to Jebel Ali Port. The container’s manifest claimed its contents were “wooden furniture”.
