Mexican Zoo Receives Aid After Hurricane Dean

The IFAW Rescue Team was informed that the Payo Obispo Zoological Garden in Chetumal had been severely damaged, and headed there.
 
“We were surprised when we reached the zoo; trees were downed and there were branches everywhere. It was hard to find the roads between the cages, and many of them and the buildings where the animals were exhibited were damaged. Fortunately, no animals died and they only suffered severe stress,” said MVZ Eduardo Santurtún, the head of IFAW’s Rescue Team for Latin America.
 
Due to the severe damage to the installations, IFAW, together with the US Humane Society and the World Society for the Protection of Animals donated in equal parts a total of 15 thousand US dollars which will be used to carry out the necessary repairs.
 
The IFAW Rescue and Rehabilitation Team is not only ready to offer assistance after hurricanes and tropical storms such as those affecting Latin America, but also helps animals affected by the flooding in India and Indonesia, freed Penguins after the oil spill in Uruguay, and are present in Greece, aiding animal victims of the fires.
