John Kerry sets an urgent, but hopeful stage at Economist Ocean Summit

US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke eloquently on the topic of ocean conservation via video stream this week at The Economist's World Ocean Summit.

John Forbes Kerry is the most ocean-centered U.S. Secretary of State in history. His excellent speech via live video link this week at The Economist magazine's World Ocean Summit, left me and other lucky ocean leaders swooning in sunny Half Moon Bay, California on the shores of the Pacific.

Half a century ago, on a distant shore, John Fitzgerald Kennedy synthesized what generations of Americans and seafaring citizens of countless other nations so deeply feel about the sea:

"All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came."

Two JFKs, both sons of New England, U.S. Navy veterans, Senators from Massachusetts, who, if memory serves, once sailed together long ago, have helped keep the sea in our vision, as well as our veins.

Catch a vision of John Kerry's inspiring speech via the video link above and stay tuned for more from Secretary Kerry and other international ocean leaders at the State Departments' Ocean Conference later this year.
