From May 1 through May 4, the first training session of the pilot Caribbean Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (C-EWCL) class was held in Antigua. The seventeen carefully selected participants from the Caribbean islands and Central American Caribbean coast gathered for three days of intensive skills and leadership training, as well as mentoring and discussion about their professional choices and future career direction.

Here’s a report from Gina Miller, IFAW’s legal policy analyst, about a captive tiger in Louisiana:

Laws that govern the private ownership of big cats vary widely from one state to another but they do have one thing in common—they’re not enough to protect big cats in private hands. Some 10,000 to 20,000 big cats are kept captive by private owners in the U.S., and they aren’t in zoos but in backyards, basements, garages, sheds and even truck stops.

Yes, you read that correctly: It is legal to keep a tiger at a truck stop.

Het gebeurt niet vaak dat je een fout moet toegeven, en tegelijkertijd opgelucht bent. Toch is dat precies wat er gebeurde naar aanleiding van een persbericht van een aantal weken geleden.

Het IFAW had een persbericht uit laten gaan waarin stond dat medewerkers van de Keniaanse belastingdienst (KRA) in de haven van Mombasa een vrachtcontainer hadden aangetroffen met daarin een onbekende hoeveelheid ivoor.

In januari van dit jaar werd IFAW regiodirecteur Azië Grace Ge Gabriel in het IFAW-kantoor in China uitgebreid geïnterviewd voor de bekende BBC-documentaireserie Panorama. De aflevering draaide om het werk dat het IFAW wereldwijd verzet in de strijd tegen ivoorstropers.

Veldverslag: lente breekt aan voor drie Russische berenjongen

April 2012. Drie bruine beertjes van een jaar oud hebben een halsband met satellietzender gekregen, zodat ze ook na hun vrijlating in Bubonisty, Rusland, kunnen worden gevolgd. In het opvangcentrum voor weesberen van het IFAW in Rusland worden weesbeertjes met de hand grootgebracht en zodra ze over de benodigde vaardigheden beschikken vrijgelaten om de rest van hun leven in het wild door te brengen.

This week, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, more than 25 veterinarians, animal responders, animal control officers, and volunteers are acquiring new skills to rescue animals from disasters. The ‘Advanced Animal Responder Boot Camp’ is a five-day training sponsored by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org).

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) is calling for critical blue whale habitat to be withdrawn from the acreage list released to the oil and gas industry in today’s announcement by Resources Minister, Martin Ferguson.

At the APPEA conference today Minister Ferguson released vast offshore areas in the Bonney Upwelling region in southern Australia, exposing one of only three blue whale feeding grounds in Australia to petroleum exploration involving the use of seismic airguns*.
